Local history corner supplement relating to the unknown violinist
George Batterby 1867 - 1955.
In the April addition of the Fakenham Sun, we appealed for information in relation to this photograph which came to us via the Guelph Museum, Ontario, Canada. The photograph by Jonas F Wright of Wells Road, Fakenham featured a young man in Church Army uniform holding a violin.
We were delighted when Pat Poskitt from Fakenham answered our plea, bringing the mystery surrounding the “The Unknown Violinist” to an end. Pat recognised the young Church Army Captain as her great grandfather George Batterby. George Batterby was born in 1867 in Brancaster and joined the Church Army when he was 18years old... probably when the photograph was taken. George moved around the country, being married in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1888, worked in Peterborough and ran a hostel for the Church Army in Marylebone where he was a Church Army Captain. He came back to Norfolk and settled in Hempton. His son, Clarence, was a well known figure in the area and ran a market gardening business in Hempton. One of his grandsons, Jonathon, emigrated to Guelph in Canada. Below are a selection of pictures, newspaper cuttings and documents which have kindly been donated to the archive by Pat. |
