Evacuated to Fakenham
A 1941 Wartime Diary of Schoolboy Frederick Parker Price £2.00 Frederick William Parker was born in London on 16th October 1926, the third of seven children. He was a very intelligent child and won a scholarship to the Central Foundation School – a grammar school in Islington.
Frederick's school was evacuated to the market town of Fakenham in Norfolk during the Second World War to escape bombing in the capital and remained there until 1944. As they prepared to return home their school was damaged by a flying bomb and so their departure was delayed until June 1945. Frederick’s diary was sent to Fakenham Community Archive by his widow, Joan, and we are very grateful to her for granting us permission to publish this account of her husband’s life as an evacuee in Fakenham during the war years. |
Frederick’s diary gives a charming and detailed account of life in Fakenham during the war years and is an authentic and heart-warming account of childhood over seventy years ago. This self-reliant 14 year old made an entry in his diary conscientiously every day. He worked as a part-time delivery boy for the local grocer, saving money for his fare home. He grew vegetables on his own allotment, went to Chapel most weeks, read widely and regularly wrote letters home.

Discovering More Old Fakenham by Jim Baldwin The latest in a series of books featuring photographs of old Fakenham Jim Baldwin Publishing Solutions |
Discovering Old Fakenham by Jim Baldwin Books featuring old photographs are always very popular: they give the reader an insight into life in their locality in years gone by. In this book Jim Baldwin, a prolific writer on the history of Fakenham, has put together a volume of old Fakenham and Hempton photographs from the collection of Fakenham Local History Society. Some of the photographs date from the latter part of the 19th century while some are from the 1950s and, being 60 years old, this puts them into the category of old pictures as well! Like most towns and villages Fakenham has seen many changes to its townscape, some quite dramatic, and these changes are also documented for the benefit of those wishing to identify where a particular site was. Fakenham is proud of its heritage and the aim of this book is to give the reader, whether a local resident or a visitor, some idea of why this is so. Jim Baldwin Publishing Solutions |
