Eagle Iron Works, Creake Road, Sculthorpe
The Eagle Iron Works in Creake Road has an engineering history dating back to the mid-1800s. James Blackett; engineer, iron and brass founder, agricultural implement manufacturer and wagon builder established his business there in 1862. Oliver Rix, an apprentice to Blackett, went on to become manager of the works, then following Blackett's death in 1891, Oliver Rix acquired the business from the executors and it became Oliver Rix Ltd.
As business flourished land was acquired on the opposite side of Creake Road, allowing for further development. While ownership of the business has changed hands many times in recent years we are reminded of the works historic past; both by its postal address which for over 150 years has remained unchanged and the work’s founder, James Blackett whose name is perpetuated by nearby Blackett's pit, (the old foundry's water source) and ‘Foundry Close’, the modern housing development which now occupies the old foundry site.
