The Daniel Meadows exhibition |
In August 1974 professional photographer Daniel Meadows brought his double decker bus to the Bridge Street car park in Fakenham and took photographs of local people in the town. This was part of the ‘Free Photographic Omnibus' project sponsored by the Arts Council to record the changing face of England in the 1970s. The Free Photographic Omnibus was invited to the town by the Fakenham Festival Committee, chaired at that time by Elizabeth Stennett-Wilson. The exhibition was held in the Conservative Club in May 1975. 38 years later Lisa Smerdon, who helps to manage Fakenham Community Centre, offered a ‘box of photographs’ to Fakenham Community Archive which she had discovered in the attic of the Community Centre - these are the same photographs from the original exhibition and one of only two sets still existing in the country. With the permission of Daniel Meadows, we were delighted to display these once more in a special exhibition, hosted by Fakenham and District Community Archive. |

The week-long exhibition in May 2013 was staged in Fakenham Parish Church. Many visitors who came along were able to add names to some of those photographed, or actually recognised themselves or their family or friends as fresh-faced youngsters back in the 1970s. The images below feature young people who were photographed but are yet to be identified. While browsing, if you able to positively identify anyone please get in touch |
